Reflections from Kele Koole, Kerus Care Center Director

Finding Family Through Compassion

Working at the Kerus Care Center (KCC) over the past twelve years has profoundly shaped my personal life in the most positive ways. Caring for the eighty-four orphaned and vulnerable children in our community of Soshanguve has taught me the true meaning of compassion and selflessness—every day requires a willingness to give of yourself, your time, and your heart.

Through the years, the children and staff have become much more than coworkers and beneficiaries; they have become my family. We rely on one another for strength, encouragement, and joy. The sense of purpose and fulfillment I’ve found here has enriched my life beyond measure, reminding me daily of the power of love and dedication in transforming lives—including my own.

Learning to Care Deeply—But Also Wisely

As a naturally empathetic person, my greatest challenge is maintaining balance and perspective as I walk with staff, grannies and children through their many serious life challenges.  While I will always care deeply, it is just as important for me to care wisely.  Sometimes there is no perfect answer or clear solution, just space for empathy, reflection and growth.

Some of my greatest joys at work come from the simple, genuine moments of connection. The hugs from the kids and their guardians,

and the heartfelt thank you that may seem small but mean the world to me. Watching others grow or heal because of my care fills me with a profound sense of purpose and gratitude. In witnessing their growth, I’ve also experienced my own healing and transformation.

Showing others kindness and compassion has also helped me to become a better mother to my own children. The empathy, patience, and understanding I practice at work have deepened my relationships at home, reminding me daily that care and compassion are powerful forces that ripple far beyond my workspace.

Guided by Mentorship, Grounded in Purpose

I am deeply grateful to my bosses, Dr. Marcia and Dr. Jennie, who are not only my superiors but also my mentors. These ladies have given me countless opportunities to learn, grow and discover my strengths – walking alongside me through every step of my journey, never making me feel less than. It’s rare to find leaders who treat you like family while maintaining a healthy balance between work and play.  Our KCC motto, “We are family,” truly lives in our daily work and relationships.

I am grateful for the many opportunities they have given me – from facilitating training to taking part in fundraising events in America. These experiences have allowed me to meet new people, build meaningful relationships, and grow both personally and professionally. Their trust and guidance continue to inspire me to give my best in everything I do.

Working at Kerus wasn’t a coincidence for me; it feels like destiny – a calling that aligns perfectly with who I am and what I value most.

Every experience, every challenge, and every success adds to my own learning and growth, and that continuous evolution brings me deep fulfillment and joy.  It has also deepened my faith in a profound way.

Our daily devotionals uplift and encourage me to trust God more deeply.  My journey here has truly been one of walking with grace – growing in spirit, strength, and purpose every day.
